Forestry Support,
News GFS has been contracted to support the development of the management system for FMU 17A to meet FSC certification requirements by Nov 2008 under the Forestry Support Program. FMU 17 consists of 50,020 ha of natural tropical forest that has been logged a number of times over the past 15 years and is considered heavily degraded and in need of rehabilitation. GFS has assisted the Sabah Forestry Department to conduct an aerial survey for orangutans and a social assessment for the 4 villages associated with FMU 17A.
GFS is currently revising the Forest Management Plan to meet FSC certification requirements. GFS will also support efforts for establishing carbon projects as appropriate in FMU 17B while developing the management system in that section of the forest reserve.

The Malua Forest Reserve is considered a significant location for orang-utang, pigmy elephants, gibbons, clouded leopards, Sumatran rhinoceros and many bird species. GFS was awarded a project by the Sabah Forestry Department to monitor Reduced Impact Logging (RIL) of over 25,000 ha in one year under 3 logging companies.
