Global Forestry Services (GFS) is a technical specialist company that provides market-oriented solutions for forest management and the sustainability of forest-based industries. GFS mission is to provide the highest level of technical support to the forest industry that meet international certification standards as well as management services for forest rehabilitation, preservation of carbon and sustainable investment. GFS services include Forestry Support Program, Legal Verification & Wood Tracking Program, Forest Carbon Services, Forest Investment Services and Training & Support Services.

GFS is dedicated to support efforts to curb Climate Change from Carbon Capture , Avoided Deforestation to provide protection against carbon loss of existing forests. GSF has established forest investment services to develop and market projects on forest restoration and plantation development as a low-risk and environmentally friendly Green Investment.

GFS provides Legality Verification & Wood Tracking as a Due Diligence System to assist in the demonstration that timber and wood products are documented as Low Risk to comply with International Regulatory requirements such as EU Timber Regulations, Lacey Act, Australia Illegal Logging Act, Japan Clean Wood Act, etc.

Global Forestry Services is supporting the development of the Lao Timber Legality Assurance System in collaboration with NIRAS-IP over a 5 year project funded by KfW. GFS will develop a comprehensive forest sector monitoring system that will incorporate integration of a field Verification System with a Digital Information Management System, supported by extensive training for capacity building in the formation of the Laos TLAS. The proposed Digital Information Management System will be comprised of three key elements: (i) a forest module, (ii) a wood processing and trade module, and (iii) a FLEGT licensing module.

The field verification system will be based on site evaluation of forest management, harvesting, identification of logs, log transport, receipt by mills, production of raw material through finished products for local sale and export. GFS will provide extensive training of government staff and companies as appropriate to meet the Lao TLAS requirements, verification protocols, and use of the Information Management System.

Client Sabah Forestry Department – Sabah, Malaysia.
Description

 

 

GFS conducts independent monitoring for Legal Compliance to the Sabah Timber Legality Standard P1-6 for all licensed forests, manufacturing, trade, and export companies in Sabah as part of the GFS Legal Verification and Wood Tracking Services.

GFS conducts monthly field assessments to verify compliance of forest management & operations to the Sabah TLAS Legal Standard (Principles 1-4) and annual monitoring of Legal Compliance of manufacturing, trade & export companies (Principles 5-6).

GFS posts summary assessment reports on the GFS Website under the client database and issues a Statement of Compliance as applicable. The Sabah Forestry Department issues a Sabah TLAS Compliance Certificate based on the GFS assessment report and a compliance statement.

Client: Greenworld Sdn Bhd
Description: The key project objective is to develop a Pilot Project on carbon & wildlife conservation in the Class I protected Forest Reserve of Ulu Segama to mitigate the effects of “Climate Change” as well as provide a system to protect and enhance habitat for wildlife; watershed, biodiversity that is associated with existing natural forests that can be certified under the Global Conservation Standard.  Additional project goals are to develop programs for environmental education, research and care facilities for wildlife in relation to the conservation project activities.

The Carbon Conservation project goal is to monetize the carbon and conservation values of the forest area to support enhancement and preservation of both carbon and key wildlife species such as the Orangutan, Sun Bear and Pigmy Elephants within Ulu Segama Forest Reserve.   Ulu Segama has been certified under the FSC system for management related to conservation activities, however as there are no harvesting activities to gain market advantages for certified timber products.

Project Scope / Identification:  The initial step in establishment of the carbon conservation forestry project is to carry out a preliminary evaluation of the proposed areas within class 1 protected forest reserve of Ulu Segama FR for enhancement / preservation and of carbon stock and habitat for wildlife in relation to the requirements of the Global Conservation Standard.

Client Private wood processing and timber trading companies
Description: GFS provides evaluation and monitoring of manufacturers and traders under the Wood Tracking Program (WTP) based on a formal Chain of Custody (COC) systems (Standard GFS-WI-006-WTP.3 or local standard) to track the material used in wood products are verified legal and traceable back to the forest or plantation.

Participating companies must have a formal risk assessment of all suppliers to evaluate legal origin of raw material.  All suppliers that are NOT considered low risk must be verified legal, based on field visits to the site to document compliance with legal requirements (GFS-WI-006-LVS-1 or local standard). Companies under a GFS Wood Tracking Program are assessed annually (or as deemed necessary) to verify continual compliance to the COC system.
